Starting a Food Business in Jaipur? Don’t Forget Your FSSAI License! Here’s What I Learned…

Hey everyone,

I recently helped a friend set up a small food startup here in Jaipur—home kitchen tiffin services for working professionals. While sorting out logistics, one thing we almost missed was FSSAI Registration, which is mandatory by law for all food businesses in India—even home-based ones.

Here’s what we learned (sharing in case it helps anyone else starting up):

Why FSSAI License is Important:

  • It’s legally mandatory under the FSS Act, 2006
  • Builds customer trust (especially on Swiggy/Zomato)
  • Required for food delivery platforms, loans, exports
  • Keeps your business safe from legal penalties and shutdowns
License TypeAnnual Turnover
Basic RegistrationUp to ₹12 lakhs
State License₹12 lakhs – ₹20 crore
Central License₹20 crore+ or inter-state ops

Docs You’ll Need:

  • ID & address proof
  • Business location proof
  • Food category list
  • FSMS plan (for larger setups)
  • Water lab report (if applicable)

My Tip: Hire a Local Consultant (Totally Worth It)

We found the portal (https://foscos.fssai.gov.in) confusing at first, especially for document uploads, business code selection, etc. Luckily, we came across Paisa Nivaran, a Jaipur-based consultant who handled everything for us—application, paperwork, follow-ups.

They were super responsive and transparent (charged a flat fee, no upselling).
