Some thoughts about studying computer science
I study comp sci at a Russel group, starting 3rd year in September. I averaged a first in my 2nd year results and I can’t help but think that (at least MY) uni makes it way too easy to achieve a high grade without developing skills or actually learning. Majority of exams are multiple choice, so even the non-ai-usable assessments were hard to fail on, and didn’t require too much critical thinking, and most concepts felt similar to A Level difficulty. Even for my hardest module (written maths exam), they highly curved the grades so that people who thought they had performed poorly (including me which i certainly did, having skipped 2 questions) still got around 70%. As for coursework, we know that everyone uses ai to code, including industry professionals. It is incredibly soul crushing to spend 3 hours solving a coding problem that co pilot or gpt can solve in 10 seconds - so why wouldn’t you use it? But yea im starting realise getting a first isn’t too impressive (unless 3rd year proves me wrong?) and I feel like for cs students, building practical experience outside of uni is probably a lot more beneficial
