How did your siblings, parents, friends, (or anybody else really) shape your music taste?
I’ve always been curious about how I got the music taste that I got. And while a good chunk of it is because of me finding random bands and songs on the internet. Lyric videos, video essays on music like Trash Theory, and of course MusicMap.
I have lately been thinking about how a lot of the genres and bands I like were also liked by my other people I knew. Now I know that you’re probably thinking “that is the most obvious thing ever” and it is. But it’s also kind of interesting to me.
For example: Maybe I got into new wave music because my dad showed me a Tears for Fears music video when I was a kid. Maybe I’m able to handle more rougher vocals (like screaming and growling) because my brother and dad both listened to bands like Linkin Park and Nickelback a bunch of the time. Maybe I can handle the cheesiness of 80s and 90s music because of how much of that music I heard because of my dad.
Again, I know it’s kind of obvious that other people would shape your music taste, but I would still love to hear about your stories and how other people in your life shaped your music taste, just because it can be both subtle and obvious in many ways.
