Future of Terra and Clan Wolf
So hear me out. I have a potentially crazy idea that may or may not be an interesting way to develop the Battletech setting into the future. As much as many of us love to hate Clan Wolf and want to see their Star League cosplay fall apart in a spectacular fashion, what if it succeeds in a very limited manner?
Before the pitchforks come out, let me explain. I don't think it would be great for the narrative to have the Wolves unite the Inner Sphere. But what if their imitation-grade Star League plods along with a few allies, even if not entirely recognized outside of some Clans and an occasional mid-tier polity? And what if, after a generation or two, the Wolves become very... unclanlike?
What I mean is that under Alaric and his immediate successors, the Wolves turn into another Great House. It may start with the need for Alaric to get into a diplomatic marriage in return for some form of recognition from another Great House. Then, as the timeline progresses, the Wolves end up being ruled by a true dynasty, and end up being a Clan in name only.
It would be a great irony to see a Clan win rulership of Terra, only to be consumed from within by the Inner Sphere politics and dynastic expectations. By 3250, the Third Star League is basically Terran Hegemony with a few friends, ruled by House Ward-Steiner-Davion-Something, and the Inner Sphere is no closer to true unity. What are your thoughts - would you like to see something like that, does it sound ridiculous, do the pitchforks need to be brought to bear?
