On H4 visa without EAD — Volunteer work ideas while waiting for EAD (4 -6 months)
Hi everyone, I’m currently on an H4 visa without an EAD, and based on the current timelines, it might take around 4 or more months for my EAD to be approved. While I’m waiting, I really want to stay active, avoid overthinking, and feel useful in my day-to-day life. I did masters in USA in Computer Science.
Since I’m not allowed to work for pay yet, I’m exploring volunteering opportunities that are legally okay on H4 and can help me stay engaged, meet people, or even build some soft skills.
Does anyone have suggestions or personal experiences with volunteering while on H4? I’m open to: • Nonprofits or charities • Libraries, food banks, or animal shelters • Events or community service • Online/remote volunteering • Anything related to education, tech, or admin (my background is in computer science)
Would love to hear your ideas or recommendations—especially if you’re in a similar situation or have been through this wait!
Thanks in advance 😊 for reading through this post and your responses!
