Released in **late 1966**, the Bell-Matic holds the distinction of being **the world’s first automatic wristwatch with an integrated mechanical alarm**, driven by the Seiko **Caliber 4006**. While alarm watches were traditionally reserved for the Swiss high-end (think Memovox by Jaeger-LeCoultre), Seiko brought this complication to the masses but they did it in their own way.

Typical of the Bell-Matic line, this model features a silver sunburst dial, a clear day-date window at 3 o’clock driven by the 4006A automatic movement, a pusher at 2 o’clock to engage the alarm, and a crown at 3 for time and alarm adjustments. The lower portion of the dial usually bears the “Bell-Matic” name, jewel count, and Suwa logo, all laid out in classic Seiko fashion.

The watch is housed in a sharply contoured **stainless steel case**, comfortably sized and with vintage presence. Measuring **38mm across** (excluding crown). Inside, the movement is self-winding with a 27-jewel configuration, exclusive to domestic Japanese models of the early 1970s. These earlier 27-jewel Bell-Matics were gradually phased out in export markets due to U.S. import restrictions on high-jewel-count movements.

But what really makes this piece special for me beyond its history or specs is how it *feels*. Set the alarm, push the button, and wait. The sound isn’t aggressive. It’s not the loud clang of a bedside alarm. It’s subtler I would say, like a spring tensioned and released, like a metallic whisper reminding you of something only you know. There’s something poetic about that.

It’s also deceptively simple in operation. Four functions only, time setting, alarm setting, alarm winding, and day change  which are all controlled through the main crown and alarm pusher. There are no gimmicks here , just classic Seiko design.
