Should I pursue masters in local uni?
Currently working in an SME, earning around SGD6k/month with 3 YOE.
Joined as a developer, but over time, my role shifted into project management as the big boss leaned more towards offshore developers. Now, I mostly handle project scoping and coordinate external teams. There’s barely any coding, no mentorship, and honestly, I don’t feel like I’m growing. I sometimes feel like I have no future..?
I’ve been trying to study on weekends and prep for interviews, but progress has been painfully slow. I didn’t come from a CS background, so my fundamentals are kinda weak. I’ve gone for a few technical interviews, but I keep getting rejected, especially during the coding rounds. I’m feeling v defeated and unsure where to go from here.
I’ve also been considering doing a Master’s instead, to like maybe take a proper break.. But not sure if that’s the right direction for me..
Pros I’m thinking of: • Would finally have dedicated time to learn and brush up my fundamentals (esp. since I didn’t study CS) • Could possibly do internships during/after to get real coding exposure and enter better companies, as internships probably have lower requirements? • May help me rebuild my confidence and reassess what I want out of my career • A structured break from work could help with the burnout I’m feeling?
Cons I’m thinking of: • Expensive (I think with subsidies, it amounts to SGD40k+?) • No income for about 2 years, which can be anxiety-inducing.. • No guarantee I’ll land a better job or pay after graduating
If anyone has been in a similar situation or has thoughts on this, would really appreciate your insights. Is taking a break for a master’s a smart move? TT
