VAT refund Europe

Hi! We have an upcoming vacation (first time) in Spain and also thinking of going somewhere else in Europe like Switzerland or France before heading back to US. Just wondering how does VAT refund works? Let’s say if I buy something from Spain, can I get the VAT refund before exiting Spain though we’re not yet heading back to US?
