Should I be making my crew expert level for each vehicle?

I'm a newish player, and I haven't really looked at any guides, but from 1.0 to 2.0, it wasn't too expensive to make my crew expert level, and now I'm at about 4.0 going into 5.0, and the price has really jumped. Should I be doing this still?
