Husband's unexpected reaction to my self care: jealousy and passive aggression? Should I keep practicing the skills despite it triggering him?
So I am on my self care journey and part of that has been making friends. Over the past 15 years of being married and having 2 kids a lot of my friendships have either ended or greatly distanced. My husband, on the other hand, has maintained his friendships. He has gone on trips with them throughout the years and does what he wants to do with them. Admittedly, that made me jealous for a long time and created a push pull dynamic where I was always chasing him-his attention, approval, time. Since I really began to work on myself a year ago, a lot of LD's teachings really resonated with me. I have started to take care of myself, but it has triggered some unexpected reactions in my husband, and not all of them have been positive.
For example, while he has complimented me on my weight loss, for example, he has also made jokes about how I am going to leave him, do I even find him attractive anymore, who am I trying to be attractive for, etc. Because I know him very well, I know he jokes as a form of passive aggression or letting me know how he really feels. Most recently, I have been trying to make new friends. I made a girl friend around my age at work. I was going to go to dinner with her, but she canceled last minute. When he though I was going to go he guilt tripped me. It made me feel bad. I am not making friends to spite him or be petty or anything. It is to invest in my own self care and happiness. It makes me feel like this is a control tactic on his part.
For women here whose husband's got jealous during their self care journeys, what did you do? I feel like I have conditioned my husband to believing I will always be subservient to him, which I did for a long time out of fear of abandonment, but that was making me miserable, so I am trying to change so I can feel better about myself. But I am not sure he wants this change (which is really toxic if you think about it). Should I proceed anyway? I want to be happy too!
