DOs & DON’Ts for Medical Travelers in Turkey
If you’re planning a medical trip to Turkey – especially to Istanbul – here are 5 practical tips that go beyond hospital care. These are based on what many international patients have told me they wish they knew earlier:
⸻
✅ 1. Always Check the Taxi Meter
If you take a taxi in Istanbul, make sure the digital meter (taksimetre) — located in the center of the front windshield — is turned on at the beginning of the ride. 🔹 If it’s not running, politely ask the driver to activate it.
⸻
✅ 2. Avoid Buying Souvenirs in Touristic Hotspots
Around the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, and the Grand Bazaar, expect prices to be significantly marked up. 🔹 For better deals on small souvenirs, walk a few blocks away from tourist-heavy streets.
⸻
✅ 3. Choose Restaurants Where Locals Eat
Restaurants in tourist areas are often overpriced. 🔹 With a quick search or by asking a local, you can find better food at lower prices just around the corner.
⸻
✅ 4. Don’t Carry Too Much Cash
Credit card usage is very common in Turkey — even in small shops and cafes. 🔹 No need to carry large amounts of Turkish Lira.
⸻
✅ 5. Tipping Etiquette in Restaurants
Some restaurants already include a “service charge” on your bill. 🔹 If not, and you’re satisfied with the service, it’s common to leave a 10–15% tip.
