how to get ring but not notification sounds

i have no idea why or how google organises its settings, but i would like to have the phone ring, like a phone does, but not tweet and hoot every 5 seconds. it's infuriating : why are different sound sources paired together? i even set the default sound to none. please help i keep missing work calls.
