$300 Rent increase

I rented a 2 bedroom condo for $2500 in Jun 2023 out of desperation during the housing craze. Then my landlord increased the rent to $2800 in Jun 2024. He only gave me 2 weeks notice of the increase.

My lawyer friend said this is illegal and I'm thinking about going to court to get some money back. Any flaws with this idea? I don't want to upset my landlord who has been pretty responsive. Thanks in advance!
