Thrawn´s Revenge - Massdriver cannons

The Vengeance-class frigate and the Kedalbe-class battleship utilize the massdriver cannon. While I´ve looked it up on the "Space Projectile Damage and Armor Breakdown" on the thrawn´s revenge wiki, I can´t point out some distinctive strenghts. For me they seem to have roughly the damage output of a single light ion/turbolaser without being that much affected by the shipclass-type, combined with the reach of a heavy single ion-/turbolaser. Does anyone know at what they´re especially good at?
