Getting a foot in the door
I'm not trying to rant, but I am genuinely curious and looking for advice.
I've worked in production homebuilding for six years, primarily as a coordinator and purchasing agent for a high-volume builder. Over time, I've wanted to transition into estimating and have been actively trying to transition into a role within a GC, as an entry level, estimating coordinator, etc.
Despite sending resumes, making calls, etc., I keep running into the same roadblock, No direct estimating experience. I understand that completely, but I'm also struggling with how to actually get that experience.
I don't have a construction management or engineering degree. I studied accounting because I wasn't sure what I wanted to do at the time. But I've worked closely with estimators, trades, plans, takeoffs, and scopes, so I thought maybe that could at least get my foot in the door.
Did I screw up by not getting into this earlier, or is there still a realistic pathway to break in? I'd really appreciate any insight or even honest feedback.
