The sky was colorless above the valley of forgotten names. Kaelith stood alone beneath a dead tree, its limbs gnarled like the hands of beggars, grasping at clouds that no longer drifted. The world was quiet—too quiet. Even Syndra waited far behind, unwilling to follow.

He whispered the final rites, and his breath chilled not from fear, but from the weight of what must be done.

He lifted his hand and called the Door.

The air groaned as space cracked open before him, revealing an ancient archway etched in silver flame and bone script. Behind it, darkness churned like an ocean of ink. It reeked of death but not rot. No, this was deeper. An ending that waited to become a beginning.

Kaelith stepped through.

Inside the Underworld, the realm was still. The land was a river, black as sorrow, and boats drifted without oars, carried by will alone. The mist knew his name. The whispers welcomed him like an old friend. From the bank, a robed figure held out a flask porcelain, veined with red.

Kaelith took it in silence. The potion inside shimmered like melted twilight. He drank.

It tasted like forgotten lullabies.

Then, he sat at the edge of the river, expression unreadable. He pulled out his dagger. Not with dread, but calm the calm of endings. He leaned forward, lips parting to whisper a single word:

“Guide.”

He slit his own throat.

The world froze.

The river rose and swallowed him.

...

Kaelith awoke inside the current. His body was the boat now. His cloak flowed like funeral banners. Around his neck, a silver token of passage. His eyes were deeper two coals burning with purpose and pain.

No longer a man. Not just spirit.

The Ferryman had returned.

And he would guide the dead home.
