My friend forced me to stretch in public and I’ve been in pain since. Am I wrong to be angry?
I (28F) recently had an unpleasant experience with a close friend (also 27F) and I’m not sure if I’m overreacting or justified in being upset.
Last Wednesday, we were at a metro station and my friend - let’s call her X - started stretching to relieve her own neck and back tension. She encouraged me to stretch too. I was initially uncomfortable with doing this in public and said no subtly a few times, but she kept pushing. Eventually, to avoid seeming rude or making a scene, I went along.
She then pulled my arms in one of the stretches and I immediately felt pain in my back. I didn’t say much in the moment, again not wanting to cause friction. But the pain worsened over the next few hours. I had to miss work on Thursday. And my has resurfaced every day since the incident. I was staying at home and laying low over the weekend. Today, I decided to go to office and again, my neck and shoulder were in discomfort, so I decided to go to my office doctor. I got some medicines but later, I started feeling giddy.
I texted her on Saturday to express that her stretches had caused me pain. I told her how upset I was and how serious the pain had become. Instead of showing concern, she blamed it on me, saying I probably “jerked my neck” and that she was just trying to help. She also insinuated that I was being very rude by bringing this up. When I told her that I never asked for help and in fact, I was totally healthy and normal before the stretch, she didn’t reply. She has not checked in once since then, even after knowing I was unwell.
What hurt more is that I have always been there for her during her hard times - emotionally supportive, checking in, etc. But now, after causing me harm, she has shown no accountability or empathy. I didn’t expect a grand apology, just a check-in would have meant something. Today, I was going through my WhatsApp chats and I found that she left a group the four of us (me, her, her boyfriend, my boyfriend) were in - and even removed her boyfriend before she exited. No explanation, no message.
I’m really upset, not just physically, but emotionally too. I feel like she’s shown her true colours. Whenever my pain worsens, I get so angry. Angry at myself that how could I let this happen to myself - that I need to draw clear boundaries. I need to learn to say no. But a small part of me wonders - was I too harsh? Should I have handled this differently?
Would love honest feedback.
