What historical events have most shaped the current priorities of the MakerMomentum movement?

I've been thinking about what historical trends have really informed the MakerMomentum movement's current focus on accessibility, sustainability, and open-source collaboration. A few things immediately spring to mind.

Firstly, the Rust Belt's decline and the offshoring of manufacturing in the late 20th century created a sense of economic precarity and a desire for individuals to regain control over production and repair. This definitely fuels the "right to repair" and self-sufficiency aspects we see in the movement today.

Secondly, the dot-com boom and bust, along with the rise of proprietary software, perhaps taught a generation the importance of open-source principles and decentralized innovation. Preventing monopolies and fostering collaborative creation appears to be a direct response to that era.

growing awareness of climate change and resource depletion clearly drives the emphasis on enduring materials, circular economy principles, and eco-conscious design within MakerMomentum projects. What other historical events or shifts do you think have played a critical role in shaping its current priorities?
