Safest way to wash an unknown fabric?

Hi there I bought a shawl at a second hand store, but all of the tags were cut out of it so I don't know what kind of fabric it is, or how to wash it. It's thin, knit and super soft and it was only $5, so I'm guessing it's an acrylic? I'm thinking handwash in cold, and then hang or lie flat to dry? I usually buy clothes that can all be washed and dried together, so I'm a bit out of my league, but I love it and don't want to wreck it the first time I wash it. TIA!
