Power of Attorney: 18 Year Old Going to College
Hey everyone, I am an 18 year old who will be going to college soon. My parents are asking me to sign forms from Mama Bear Legal Forms, which include Health Care Directive and Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care, HIPAA release, FERPA release, and Durable Power of Attorney for Financial Decisions.
My dad wants me to sign the FERPA release as my parents are paying the full cost of my college, so it makes sense to me to sign it, unless I am missing something. The HIPAA and Health Care power of attorney forms are in case I need my parents to make a medical decision for me when I am unable to, and so they can help me in medical emergencies. I am okay to signing this, as I generally have a good relationship with my parents so I wouldn't mind them knowing about my medical condition.
My dad says he doesn't care if I sign the financial power of attorney form, but when I told my mom I didn't want to, she felt disheartened that I don't trust her. She said that trust goes both ways and that moving forward, if I don't sign, she will revaluate what she feels I deserve. My mom said that she and my dad will not pay for car insurance, as I recently got my license, and that I should surrender my license or accept that the insurance would stack up and cost more when I get it down the line.
What should I do? Any advice helps. Thanks!
