One of my athletes increased FTP by 15% in 90 days: here's how we used data analysis to make it happen
I coach amateur cyclists who want to train with a pro-level mindset using structured training and data. One of my athletes recently achieved a 15% FTP gain in just 90 days, and I wanted to share how we approached it using data-driven training.
Before we started working together, he trained mostly based on feel, riding when he could, going hard when he felt like it. Pretty common, right?
Once we began working together, we used a combo of TrainingPeaks and WKO5 to assess:
- His power duration curve
- Time in zone
- TSS/CTL/ATL trends
- Intensity distribution and fatigue markers
The biggest shift came from identifying that he was overreaching on recovery days, and undertraining in key sessions.
We rebuilt his weekly structure with:
- Targeted intensity sessions
- Strategic rest blocks
- Load planning based on objective data (not vibes)
After just 12 weeks, his FTP improved by 15%, endurance at higher intensities went up, and he reported better sleep and recovery.
Data doesn’t replace hard work, but it ensures every session has a purpose.
I’m always testing different performance strategies with the athletes I coach, and the results continue to surprise even them.
If you're the kind of rider who enjoys data and wants to train with purpose (without burning out), feel free to drop a DM or ask anything here.
You might be surprised at what the right structure can do for your numbers, and your motivation
