This is a work in progress:
You know how it feels to lose a tooth? That slimy feeling of an empty space where a tooth once was? That’s the first sensation I can remember from the start of my new life. My tongue poked around inside my mouth seeking the familiar feeling of solid teeth, instead in the bottom row now was space after space of empty gums. That’s what I remember feeling as awareness slowly returned to me. I poked it with my tongue, I felt like I was waking from a dream. The week before, I had gotten a new job, and signed a new lease on an apartment, maybe not feeling my teeth was a dream too.... It wasn't, but it turns out, a nightmare really was just beginning.
"Sir, can you hear me? Can you hear me? CAN YOU HEAR ME? Can you tell me your name? Come on sir wake up, wake up, WAKE UP!" I tried to respond but could only make a gurgling sound, as something was wrong with my me. The next 1 ½ hours are thankfully a blur as the paramedics cut me from the wreckage with jaws of life. After an eternity they pulled me out, gave me a paralytic and life flighted me to the U of U where I was placed in a medically induced coma and several surgeons spent several hours repairing my shattered body.
"Michael, can you hear me? Open your eyes if you can hear me! Michael wake up, wake up Michael, WAKE UP!" Why were they calling me, Michael, that was my first name and no one called me that. I finally awoke from my medically induced coma with a scream and started thrashing around, the world was on fire. My legs had an actual exoskeleton and my right arm was in a huge cast up to the shoulder and my left arm was tied to the bed and a string was tied around my mouth like a gag. And pain, pain like I could never have imagined filled every piece of my body and mind. It was all consuming and it overwhelmed me and I lapsed into a seizure.
The doctors quickly put me back into my medically induced coma, satisfied that my mind was still functioning but knowing that my body could not handle the immense pain I was in.
I lapsed into unconsciousness, blissfully unaware that my whole life had just changed.
