Mothers should walk their daughter down the aisle, not fathers.

Let's be real: the whole "father giving the bride away" thing is old-fashioned and patriarchal in origin. It was created at a time when women were literally property, handed from one man to another. And we're still clinging to it like it's some kind of sacred ritual. Why? Habit? Comfort? Nostalgia? Meanwhile, mothers the ones who do the carrying, the emotional work, hold everything together, find themselves spectators at their own daughter's rite of passage. If a mother raised her daughter, protected her, made sacrifices for her, and had an impact on the woman she became, why is she sitting in the front row and not proudly standing alongside her? We can't say we believe in equality, in honoring real love and labor, and then ignore the women who are doing the walking. If tradition is no longer telling the truth, then maybe it's time to reinterpret it.
