Help with an Alaskan Malamute

Advice

Hi everyone, I’m posting on behalf of a friend who really needs some advice about her Alaskan Malamute.

He’s just over a year old and lives in a kennel outside, as he can’t be indoors due to the homeowner’s rules. He has a 60m² fenced area and gets two 1.5-hour walks a day, plus playtime in the garden.

The biggest issues are his extreme destructiveness and overexcitement. He’s broken through multiple fences, and once escaped and killed eight chickens. At night, he howls constantly, and the whole village is starting to complain. On walks, he pulls so hard that he recently broke his owner’s finger, and he gets totally overstimulated around other dogs, lunging and dragging his handler.

His owner is really discouraged and talking about giving him away, feeling like she made a mistake and failed in raising him. I personally really disagree with that and feel terrible for the dog. I think he’s overwhelmed, frustrated, and not getting what he truly needs as a working breed. He’s not aggressive, just intense and full of energy with no clear outlet.

She hasn’t reached out to a trainer yet because there aren’t any good ones nearby, but I believe there has to be a better solution than giving up.

Has anyone dealt with similar challenges in northern breeds? What helped? Any advice or support is truly appreciated. I just want to help him get a chance at a better life.
