The Prophecy Does Not Depict the Weird/Snowgrave Route
This is something I've been seeing a lot, but while I can see the appeal of the theory, I believe that the story will be much worse if that is the case, compared to the alternative.
A very obvious theme of the normal route is the inevitability of the prophecy. Ralsei has has been dropping hints from the beginning, as in the 3rd conversation he has with us he says that we should try to be kind, or else the result will not be favorable.
But it is in chapter 4 that this theme changed from a hint to a focus. Gerson's whole deal is that the prophecy is focused on too much, that Suzie holds to pen to write future, and while we don't know what that future is, we know that it, as Raslei says, is not favorable.
Now imagine how disappointing the story will be if, after all this talk of the prophecy, all the conversations about the inevitability of the roaring, if we find out it was completely irrelevant, because the prophecy is referring to a route that 90% of the player base will never experience.
This would completely tank every emotional pay off the story is building up. it would destroy the mystery of what the ending of the prophecy is, it would make Gerson a pointless character, and making Ralsei look extremely foolish.
But it would also ruin the Weird Route.
If the normal route explores the theme of resisting the inevitability of fate, then the snowgrave route exploring the consequences of breaking fate.
From all the way back in chapter two this was hinted. Back in the hospital there is a sliding bead toy. In the normal route it says that the beads are "marching grimly along their set path." Referencing us following the prophecy no matter what, but in the weird route the blue bead has been ripped off, showing that we are resisting the prophecy, and we are breaking things to do so.
Another hint to this is Raslei's weird route only dialog in chapter 4, where he wonders if defying the prophecy will lead to an even worse outcome.
The weird route is about exploring what happens when you want a different ending and are willing to do whatever it takes to get it.
If the prophecy is referring to the weird route, then everything I said above breaks. all this build up, all these character moments, will be wasted
Now I will be the first to admit that it's possible I'm wrong. considering how many of my theories were debunked when chapters 3 and 4 came out, it could happen again. In fact if I am wrong I am confident that Toby will implement this in a satisfying way. But I can only work with the evidence I have now, and what I have makes me believe the weird route is not the prophecy.
Now if you permit me to go a bit deeper into speculation, I want to write how I think that the normal route will deal with the theme of the inevitability of the prophecy.
I believe that we will fail to prevent the prophecy from coming to pass. The roaring will happen and the world will end. I believe that this is what happens in chapter 6.
Gerson talks about how there is only one more chapter after 5, but that it was never completed, that he ended up being consumed by the story and that no one was able to continue it. But he says that Suzie is different, Suzie holds the pen to continue the story, and that is chapter 7.
Chapter 7 will take place after the prophecy has completed, and it will be able Suzie metaphorically writing the sequel. She will turn the bad ending, that Gerson was never able to put on paper, into a good one.
I have no idea how this will go about, perhaps Suzie will literally rewrite the past with time travel shenanigans, or perhaps she will be able to fix the damage caused by the roaring through the power of her determination. There is infinite possibilities, and I'm excited to find out which one it is.
Thank you for reading, let me know what you think in the replies.
