Those who jumped from one industry to another to make more money, was it worth it?
Need some advice on next steps.
I am in Aerospace and Defense as a Sr. Buyer, I have the option to move to an Account Manager role. it says remote but 50% is travel (rip). Pay is 132-153k a year, however I've never not negotiated top range so 150k+ is end goal.
I'll be honest, I understand aerospace very well, I know the regulations required within and what manufacturers and end customers want, but ultimately I genuinely only care about long term upside for me and my future family monetarily (and time wise, with kids I dont want to be traveling so much).
I know not everyone here is with the gravy train of tech sales, and maybe I could be off with it too, but I am seeking advice on ultimate career pivot, so a few options:
-
Stick in my domain of aerospace. Easiest long-term stability, but potential for capped income, unless I get lucky with an AE role selling to aerospace companies, but knowing the sale cycle times with these companies that will be a challenge in it of itself. Anybody an account executive that sells into Aerospace companies? Would love to hear advice on this.
-
Take the account manager position as it may "pretty up" my resume. Highest level achieved is Sr. Buyer, so unsure how going from an Aerospace Account Manager, to eventually a different industry will help, maybe it makes me skip entry-level positions and move to AE? Unsure.

Just make the jump and get the entry-level position as a rep, and move to AE as quickly as possible. I know not all AE's make 200k+ a year, but I am seeing that *if* that has a potential for happening, with better closing, more volume, etc. I would prefer that than a capped income. only thing is I would have to be demoted in pay for about 12-18 months (if i get the AE job).
I just want feedback on what you guys would do looking back at your decisions. Those who jumped from one industry to another to try and make more money, was it worth it? Anybody do what I did, go from Aerospace to another industry to make more in sales? And would it be wise to take the Account manager job then try to pivot cause itll look better on my resume?
Anything helps, thanks!
