General Question about Desert climate of Nevada as someone from MA.

[Environment]

Hi everyone,

I am 27F born and raised in MA. We used to have harsh winters and mild summers, but our summers have gotten hotter, and this is challenging as it's also humid and central AC is not the norm here.

I've always heard that while dessert climates are hot, the lack of humidity makes it so some Nevadians/Arizonites actually prefer summer where they are from, rather than where it is humid. One of my family friends is moving to TX with her husband, and it's making me randomly curious about Northeast vs Southwest Weather.

But one thing I've always wondered about desert dwellers. I have always been sensitive to super dry air. Here during the MA winters, many buildings have the heat set super high, and the air is very dry as a result, my throat always get so dry and irritated, and I have this constant dry cough unless I use lozenges or a humidifier. This is not the case when I'm at home, I live with my parents, and we have the type of heat that does not make the air dry (it's forced air that does this).

I wonder, is the desert air always like that? Are some of you constantly running humidifiers at home/at work? I read a post on reddit years ago about a guy who had constant sinus issues as a kid, and because he was medically neglected, he just suffered until he just happened to move to Louisiana as an adult.
