I am trying to write a script for a show at my local theatre group. Everyone told me I should do it as I am funny and I would make a really good show. But how on earth do you write comedy into a script without really forcing it?
I just don’t understand. What is the process? Do you write jokes or situations you find funny within the context of the show first and then write the script around them. So many shows have call backs and complex jokes that make it seem like this is the way they are written because how could you accidentally stumble upon the perfect joke if you are just writing it straight? Or do you just write it and hope the jokes come along as you go and then add callbacks and joke foreshadowing and slow set up later?
I have a few funny concepts in mind but how do you implement them? How do you translate a funny idea (that isn’t necessarily a joke or punchline in itself) into a script format?
I know this is a very basic question, and the main answer is probably just “write, and revise and practice” but if anyone has any general pointers then that would be very much appreciated. :)
