Changing 14 year old custody agreement in Michigan
Co-parent and I have used the same custody agreement for 13 years. Child is 14 and starts high school in fall. My remote job that allowed me to telework at home now requires me to work in office 50% of time.
My custody is about 45%. I’ve had the child two days one week and four the next with weekend for 13 years.
My commute is tough and in the opposite direction of the high school. In order to make the current schedule work my child will have to get up earlier, get home later, and spend more time home alone.
My in office schedule is now two days one week and 3 the next. I need the schedule modified to where the custody time is consolidated. I’m not asking to change the ratio of time just consolidate it to 6 days Thursday night - Wednesday morning every other week. It will provide a more hospitable environment for the child and loses no disruption or inconvenience to co-parent. I honestly don’t know how I can maintain the current schedule without stress on the child.
I haven’t dealt with courts since divorce but my co-parent is objecting without a sufficient rationale like it conflicts with their work. I think it’s more of not seeing the child for 6 days.
Would the courts accommodate a consolidation of time?
