Echo of Kahli — companion on trial

Does it matter in any way who it is? In Abbyssal Chaos it does, bc if you don't have a companion unlocked you can't activate his genes. You also get higher rewards by completing a deduction with a companion on trial. But I haven't seen this information on Unicorns Operations. So, how is it?
