Is AI coming for our jobs?
I recently did a CEU of using AI in therapy sessions and there was lots of great info and ideas, but the presenter also had a slide titled “AI hasn’t replaced us…yet”. It is crazy how much stuff generative AI can produce like specialized materials for therapy sessions, but is it going to evolve in a few years to where the program is leading clients through artic or language therapy? I know this may differ between settings—AI can’t perform a swallow eval or do initial evaluations in the school setting. But I can see it eventually taking over for school-based therapy for generic artic/phonology/language goals and there might be a classroom aide to make sure students are attending to their lesson on the computer. I especially worry about this as a virtual school-based SLP. If schools can’t find an in-person therapist, they may result to AI programs instead of paying for me AND an in-person facilitator to get the job done when so many parents don’t buy into virtual therapy. Thoughts on the overall impact in our field?
