Extra months deposit - second last month or after the first month? What should I do?

Which month does this go towards? We put down one extra month. Landlord says it's the second last, but I'm reading online it should be ASAP. Who is right? I don't want to get in trouble or cause any more issues with my landlord, but I do feel quite betrayed, misled, etc. then again, I know that landlords will be landlords, and will generally do everything to anything to make money regardless if it is in the tenants best interest, or if it is legal, or not. Lease is 12 months, ends next July. Have already gone through a lot of shit just trying to secure it. I am super broke after the deposit, so having the next month rent free would REALLLLLLY benefit me and help me get back on track financially. But I don't want to anger my landlord further because I want to stay after the lease is up and don't want him to try and evict me (not rent controlled).

What do I do here?
