Considering leaving TT for staff role
I really enjoy working in the University setting, however I’m finding myself become frustrated with putting in so much work for the promise of maybe a promotion and a 5% raise. I know that tenure opens doors, and maybe I should just stick it out… I’ve worked my way from adjunct to instructor, to NTT, to TT over a decade. I’m tired y’all…
I’ve started applying for staff director positions at other universities. Perhaps just to see if the grass really is greener. I’m not looking to leave without a 20% minimum pay bump, but overall it seems that in these positions the pay is better, vacation and PTO exist, and the path to career growth and promotion are possible without thousands of hours of unpaid labor.
Am I crazy to leave TT in this economy? I feel like saying goodbye to TT is goodbye forever, and maybe I’m ok with that.
