I’ve seen a couple of people interpret this scene as One showing Pencil some of the old memories she’s fond of, a place to go back to if only she gives Two and Four’s powers to her. But it’s not actually what is happening.

If you look at the background, you can see it’s the modern grasslands, with yellow grass and green bushes and trees, something that only gets added after TPOT1. These scenes physically could not have happened in the past, they’re something One herself created. A fabrication, an illusion to further manipulate Pencil and trick her into giving One what she wants. At the very least, this is what One *thinks* Pencil wants, perhaps because after watching Pencil for so long in order to push her towards causing trouble, One thinks there’s nothing about Pencil she could have possibly forgotten or misunderstood.

For example, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that in these pictures, Needle is missing. Now, Needle is technically not a Freesmarter, and between BFB and TPOT, she doesn’t have a lot of interactions with the team. But if TPOT17 is any indication, Pencil has not forgotten her; she mentions her when ranting to Book about how she doesn’t have anyone left in the game except for her, but for example, doesn’t mention Lightning (someone who did Pencil’s bidding throughout BFB1), which implies she actually considers Needle as more of a tool. She sees Needle as an ally or friend (the two things kinda muddle together in Pencil’s mind, which is definitely an issue but not done out of full-on malice), and perhaps as someone else she would want to fix things with (assuming things with Needle got ruined the way they got ruined with Book and Icy). But One didn’t catch it, or simply dismissed this information.

This paragraph is kind of a stretch and I don’t actually think it has any lore implications, but at least for the meme I want to say that Match and Pencil smiling at each other in the picture on the left but *not* doing the iconic unimouth might be another “One comes close, but misses a small little detail that shows you something isn’t quite right” kind of hint. The most likely explanation is that the unimouth was too humorous to be added onto such a serious moment, but what’s a good theory without some meaningless overanalysing?

Anyways, my very obvious conclusion is that just like the characters should be wary of One, the audience should be as well. One has either omitted parts of the truth (with Gaty and Basketball), refused to provide important information (with Donut) or full on lied before (with Bomby, Needle, Bell and Barf Bag). Anything and everything she’s said that doesn’t have tangible proof should be taken with a grain- scratch that, a barrel of salt. Whether it’s sending Pencil back in time, saying she relates to what other characters have been through, or heck, even the extent of their nonexisty-ing powers, if the proof is only something she created, there’s cause for suspicion.

This scene hides a couple interesting things about One (and Pencil)
