Tried to be more social to people, now I’m not sure I even like them

About a year ago I decided to try making new friends through a friend app. Before that, I was quite reserved and introverted. But I thought maybe it was time to open up more and be a bit more approachable so it would be easier to connect with people and make new friends. I have AuDHD and part of this is really forced but on the other hand, I can talk a lot sometimes (and I may sometimes over share a little).

So I made an effort to be more open and approachable, and talkative, easy to talk to, supportive. And it kind of worked. People started liking me, messaging me, making plans. Even at work, colleagues started coming to me more often.

But now I’m realising something weird: I don’t actually like some of these people. Like, there is nothing much wrong with them or anything, but they for some reason just drain me. I never stopped to ask myself if I even enjoy their company. I was too focused on making sure they liked me.

Now I feel conflicted. These people keep approaching me, assuming I want to keep that connection going, and I honestly just want space. But I also feel bad, because I was the one who encouraged the connection in the first place.

How do I take a step back without giving them the cold shoulder or being rude or making things awkward? How do you choose your kind of people?
