Everyone has a vested interest in seeing their 3rd and 4th round dart throws progressing in camp. I'm here to remind you to think about why this can be dangerous in how you manage your dynasty assets.
Your favorite twitter follows or part time 'beat reporter', even the official team PR account all have one goal: Generate Clicks and hold subscriber attention/engagement. What is going to hold onto more eyes in an endless ocean of information?
- "7th round rookie running with the 1s"
- "10-year vet looks solid."
These early days of camp are also the ideal place for rookies to get some run. There is ample opportunity to learn/experiment with less pressure in early August practices don't affect win-loss records. Rookies can work through mental errors, timing issues, and communication breakdowns while the teaching environment is more forgiving than regular season preparation. Coaches have more bandwidth to focus on individual development and assessment before game-planning demands consume their attention.
Lastly, there's some load management components here as well. Veterans, especially proven starters, are often can be held out of contact drills or given reduced reps to preserve their health. Coaches can afford to give rookies more physical practice time since they're not risking established production and allows for rookies to get acclimated to the speed/physicality of the NFL.
