Reliable/Reasonable 15HP Outboard Motor

Hey all-

I own a jon boat and have done a lot of work to it over the years. I currently just have an old 6HP Evinrude, and while great, it's not very powerful.

I take a yearly trip to kayak camp Horseshoe Bend, and this year I am seriously considering bringing the boat instead. I've talked to the guides, and it's all fine and dandy- except I need a real motor to haul 7 miles upstream with. It's time I invest in the 15HP.

My buddy has the same exact boat as me and has a 15HP on his that does really well where we're able to use it.

The problem is that I have spent the last 5 years banging my head against a wall with the old Merc and Evinrude I've got. I need something I can trust, and I am seriously considering just spending the $3~ grand on a new one.

Does anyone have a preference between Yamaha, Tahatsu, Suzuki, Mercury, etc.?

I'm not thrilled to buy a new motor for such an old boat but I have no doubt the motor will be with me for many years to come and provide more peace of mind and fun in the long run.
