Opinions for best under $1k DIY speakers? I can build the cabinets...

I want to resurrect my 70s JVC integrated amp and build some new speakers for it. It's been a long time since I've listened to music on a good old stereo system. As title suggests, I'm all set to build the cabinets myself.

I'm just getting acquainted with the DIY scene, but have been reading up on the most popular suppliers and all that. In the components only area, who's hot right now?

I'm in Canada, and would prefer something from here but as far as I know that limits me to Solen, right? I don't see much discussion about them online. Any opinions in here?
