Am i being lied to

a friend claims that he never received some of my messages even though it showed that he 'read' the messages. he then send me a screenshot and indeed, the messages that i send him are not there on his screen. Is this even possible? Because you can simply 'delete' the other person's messages and claim they never got through.

so am i being lied to or is it a messenger problem?
