Rakuten American Express Card Denial Data Point

Data Point

I applied for this card, and was then sent an Email by Imprint to verify my ID. I had to scan the front and back of my driver license, then I had to take a selfie video of myself, and then scan a bank statement. The process wasn't seamless as the link expired, and I had to call Imprint to send me a new verification link.

Then almost immediately after I completed all the steps, I get an email with a PDF stating this...

*"Thank you for your interest in the Rakuten American Express® Credit Card, issuedby First Electronic Bank. Your application was carefully reviewed, and we regret that we are unable to approve your application at this time, for the following reason:

We cannot validate and correlate the provided government ID and selfie images. Please ensure that your government ID is acceptable and valid, and that allpictures meet the specified requirements."*

Seriously? With all of that information, Imprint/First Electronic Bank could NOT verify my identity? I was approved for credit cards from Chase, Citi, Amex, Barclays, US Bank, etc. and I've NEVER had this issue or was even asked for so many ID documents.

There's no HP and the SUB is just $25, so I don't really care about the denial, it's at no loss to me. I read about people getting fraud on their First Electronic Bank cards, so the CS and infrastructure of this card seem like it will be garbage quality. I was expecting some nonsense like this to happen, since the issuer is a small, unknown bank which does weird stuff.

It would've been better if the Rakuten card was an actual co-brand of Amex, and issued by Amex. I would not be having this issue, as I already have/had 7 Amex cards.

I'm not really feeling like I want to do recon and fight for this card, as it's just $25 and the service will probably be a headache if I get this card.
