How to Sell as a Technical Founder

Most technical founders struggle with sales.
Not because they're bad at it - because they're doing it like a salesperson, not a founder.

Here's what actually works for YC teams and other founders who’ve figured out how to sell without losing their soul:

1. Diagnose. Don’t Pitch.

Sales isn’t convincing someone to buy—it’s figuring out if you can solve a real problem they already have.

Sell like a doctor:

  • Ask questions
  • Listen
  • Prescribe a solution

Start every sales call with:

  • “What’s the painful part of [X] right now?”
  • “What have you tried already?”
  • “What would make this feel solved?”

If there’s no pain, there’s no sale. That’s fine—move on.
Think of it like debugging: gather info, find where it’s breaking.

2. Write Like a Founder, Not a Rep

Cold emails fail because they sound like bots wrote them. You’re a real founder. Use that.

Instead of:

Try:

Short. Specific. Human. This is how founders talk. Don’t drop that when you start selling.

Reality check: If your manual cold emails don’t get replies, automating them won’t save you. It just helps you get ignored faster.

Fix your message first:

  1. Write 3 versions
  2. Send each to 5–10 prospects manually
  3. Double down on what gets replies

Outbound is an experiment, not a guessing game.

3. Follow Up Like a Human

Most deals die in silence, not rejection.
But don’t send desperate “bump” emails.

Use natural follow-ups:

  • “Just bubbling this up in case it slipped through—still something you’re looking at?”
  • “Quick ping—we helped 3 teams solve this last month. Want to see if it’s relevant?”

No pressure, no spammy “bump,” just a real nudge to continue the conversation.

4. Manual → Repeatable → Scalable

Founder-led sales starts by hand:

  1. Manual outreach → learn what works
  2. Test & refine messaging
  3. Document the process
  4. Automate only what doesn’t need you

Most founders skip straight to automation and wonder why nothing works.

Why Founder-Led Sales Wins

  • Instant credibility—you built the product
  • Deep technical knowledge—answer any question
  • Fast decisions—no “I’ll check with my team”
  • Genuine passion—you actually care
  • Flexible solutions—you can change things on the fly

You don’t need to “become a salesperson” to sell.
You just need to lean into your founder advantages instead of hiding them.
