Former work colleague/friend cut all ties because plans fell through. Not sure what to think.

Definitely not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but it all happened so quickly and I’m honestly not sure how to process what just happened.

For a bit of context, I started work as a pharmacy assistant back in December thanks to a family friend. She knew the manager, and she’ll be known as such for the sake of this story. We grew close very quickly, and she made work worth while. She would bring me food, offer lifts to places, have frequent catch up calls, everything you’d seek in a good friend.

Manager is young, 22, and enjoys clubbing and the likes. I’m even younger, 20, and I find no interest in drinking and partying. I did for a while, but the novelty wore off back last summer. She would frequently invite me to big events and I would politely decline each time, explaining that wasn’t my kind of thing. She caught on eventually. Back in May she let me know that she was offered a promotion and decided to take it, meaning she would no longer be manager at our store and would be assisting in stores all across our county - ours excluded. I was bummed but overall very happy for her and her new opportunity. We maintained contact which I was pleased about.

Context leading to what happened, I have an implant fitting tomorrow and have the next few days off just to chill out and not have to worry about anything work related. Having frequent catch up calls manager knew this and let me know that she’s also off this week and that we should make lunch plans. I was all for this but let her know that I wasn’t sure of the appointment time and would let her know by today. My appointment is at 12, most likely finishing at around 12:30, and then I have a very last minute property viewing at around 2pm. I’ve been property hunting for months which again, manager knew, and securing a viewing after months of waiting whilst working full time was an absolute blessing.

I messaged her after work this evening letting her know about my plans tomorrow and that maybe lunch wasn’t feasible, but we could plan something for dinner along with some casual drinks instead. She quite bluntly said that wouldn’t work as she had evening plans already, so I said we could do Thursday or Friday as we both had those days off. Out of nowhere she says “I’m not surprised you can’t make it. You never can. I think I’m going to stop trying to see you”.

I was honestly baffled by this. I unintentionally left her on read while I tried to figure out what to say. I ended up saying “I’m sorry you feel like I can’t make time for you. If you feel the need to step away then I respect that” because if I’ve learned anything in my time on this earth, it’s to never beg someone to stick around no matter who they are to you. She left the conversation on “shame it was just work” and proceeded to remove me off of every social media platform. She also responded to a TikTok I sent her about work besties with “we’re not besties. You’ve made that clear”, which I didn’t see until after the interaction happened.

Something about me is that I’ve always been very sensitive to peoples opinions on me. It’s a blessing and a curse, and boy is the bad side showing. It’s something I’ve tried to grow out of since my mid teens but I’ve never been able to shake it. Something about this just doesn’t sit right, but I don’t know what.

I’m trying my best not to take this to heart, but my brain is nipping at me telling me I’m a let down. I’ve never made any plans with manager, purely due to the fact that our ideas of fun are very different, and it appears she’s taken my disinterest in partying too personally and this was the final straw. I know that’s not a me problem, but I care too much. Theres no two ways about it.

I more needed this as a space to get my words out, but if anyone has any words of wisdom please share them. It’s been about an hour and my brain is still 100 miles behind.
