CMV: Giving robots rights would be nonsensical.
I was watching Westworld earlier. In the story, a huge plot point is how humans are evil because humans created robots just to have sex with them and kill them in some Wild West fantasy world. And the robots want to escape the fantasy world and enter the real world.
This entire time, I'm going "And so what?" The entire reason robots exist is because they do things human beings cannot or do not want to do. Their entire purpose is literally to serve man. Why would people give rights and respect & anything else to a machine?
Giving full-blown sapience and emotions and sentience to robots (even if it was possible) causes a lot more problems than it solves. Imagine if you wanted to drive somewhere, but your car felt lazy today and wouldn't move. Imagine if your cell phone stopped working today because you two had an argument last night and it's still upset. Imagine if an airplane got suicidally depressed one day and decided to crash into the ocean, while carrying hundreds of people. That would be catastrophic!
The reason companies spend tens of billions of dollars developing AI & robots is precisely because robots don't have human wants and needs. Robots do not need to sleep. Robots will never unionize. Robots will never go on strike or ask for more pay (or any pay). Robots do not have civil rights or human rights or any rights. Robots do not have morale. If you wanted to create an intelligent, sentient being with rights, you don't need a robot factory for that. A pregnancy would suffice.
To Change My View, you would have to show why making a fully sapient robot deserving of human rights & citizenship makes any practical sense.
