AC not cooling during day; maintenance says it’s working

AskFlorida

TLDR; my AC won’t cool below 79 degrees during the day. Maintenance says it’s working properly.

I have lived in Florida the past 20 years, lived in this apartment for 3. This is the first time my AC has stopped working and it can’t be (easily) explained why; the AC isn’t freezing over, they topped it off with Freon twice and I changed the filter. They used the temperature reader gun and it’s reading 63-65 degrees at the output (outside temp was 92, inside was 80). This seems like this is a normal differential (14-20 degrees), but it’s still 80 in my home lol.

It stays around 79 degrees until past 10pm and then stays around the temperature it is supposed to be set at until 10am-12pm; ie it takes HOURS for it to cool after the sun has set, and seems like it isn’t able to keep up as it gets hotter in the day.

But the thing is, just two weeks ago I turned the ac off, opened the windows so my cats could sit at the window. When I closed the window and turned the AC on it dropped from 78-74 within like 1-2 hours in the middle of the day.

They are trying to blame it on the heat(today’s high was only 96), or the fact they are doing “occupied renovations” in my home so the door is being opened more than usual(which started today but the issues started 3 days ago and I put in two maintenance tickets in before they started).Their excuses also don’t make sense regardless because it’s not cooling now(it’s night and the maintenance work is done). To add insult to injury, they are making me wait a week until they are going to check it again, because the renovations finish Friday & no service on weekends.

I am posting here because I know us Floridians constantly deal with AC issues and landlords not wanting to fix them. Please help an exhausted and overheated redditor identify a solution.
