Why is US roadside lodging so bad??

Motel 6s, bedbugs, dirty sheets, broken TVs. Even midscale offerings like holiday inn, hampton inn miss the mark and are just so dated. More of a rant than a question lol

How do you guys get around it? Wait until you see a better hotel before stopping? Splurge on an airbnb? Sleep in car?
