Vintage Ban-ei Ebonite/Urushi Eyedropper - Tsuchida Shuichi, Sakai Eisuke & Ginjiro Kabutogi 14K [B/C for Vintage Age]

Excellent to near mint condition condition black/GT vintage Ban-ei eyedropper (often called “Tsuchida pens”) with ebonite feed done by Tsuchida Shuichi, body by lathe-master Sakai Eisuke and 14K nib by Ginjiro Kabutogi. Nib is marked as a #60 along with GK’s JIS mark of 4622. It is smooth, bouncy and does flex easily. Cork seal has been replaced and is watertight. The number 60 sized nib is HIGHLY sought after in these pens, and this coupled with the absolutely stunning condition truly mark this as a rarity and gem for the best collections. $725

Sailor:

Video (must see!)

Sailor 1911 Urushi/Maki-e - Roses and Butterfly - 14K HM [N/NOS]

Unused (no sign of this ever being inked) and in A1 pristine condition, this Sailor maki-e is absolutely stunning - please see the video! This might have been an LE for a specific store or was simply a Japan-only release (paperwork in box is in Japanese only, so strongly pointing to this). Sailor’s maki-e work of this ilk typically runs in the $1-$2K area, but today I’m offering this one up for $770

Pilot:

Pilot Myu M Nib H775  [B/C for Vintage Age]

The Medium nib is perfectly smooth and lays down a not-too-wet line. Beautiful condition for the age; some microscratching that is not heavy at all, no dents/dings whatsoever. The medium-nibbed Myus are getting to be more rare and hard to come by; if you’ve waited for one to come along to add to the collection, don’t sleep on this one!   $280

Pilot Elite Full Crosshatch - 18K  Broad H1276 [B/C for Vintage Age]

Unbelievably gorgeous condition here coupled with a BROAD nib?  I know, it’s like a freaking unicorn flew up in here. No dents, dings, or any scratches. This appeared to be NOS when I acquired it; it is in excellent condition and looks close to brand new.  The broad nib is very rare to come across - even if you are on a daily lookout, the likelihood of coming across a broad nib in the crosshatch in this condition is low.  The nib is incredible and smooth; without a doubt, this beautiful pen is a collector’s itemt! Date code is H1276 (Hiratsuka plant, December 1976). Takes modern Pilot ink cartridges. Because of the “unicorn” nature of this pen and level of collectibility, my price is firm. $280

Platinum:

Platinum Belage Music 14K [B/C for Vintage age]

Appears to be new/NOS. This is a later model of the Belage after its 1979 launch. Snap cap that can be posted.  $285

Wancher:

Wancher Sekai Byakudan-nuri - Broad [N]

Brand new, unused. Retails for $600 (currently S/O), asking $400

Vintage Urushi:

Vintage Urushi/Maki-e Eyedropper - 14K Flex Nib [B/C for Vintage Age]

What we have here is a (very) vintage ebonite eyedropper with an urushi design (Kawari-nuri? Also, apologies for leaving the “ri” off of there in the photos - total brain toot) of what I believe is leaves/foliage. The feel to the finish of the pen is very much akin to other kawari-nuri finishes I have on modern pens. The designs are raised and have a glossy finish, while the main finish is matte and slightly bumpy.

This particular rod (ink shut off) system was the first I’ve come across in the configuration/assembly; the old cork present has been replaced with multiple O rings and is watertight.  That said, as I haven’t seen this sealing method previously, the application of silicone grease to the rod and entry point might be a good preventative measure (but also might prove unnecessary).

The nib itself is very much a flex nib.  I took some close-up photos to show that it is currently aligned. I am not adept in the use of flex nibs, and not a fine/extra fine nib user in general, so I will not make any comment as to the feel of the nib (to me, all flex and fine/XF nibs feel scratchy), hence the photos to show the tipping in detail. The writing sample shows the extent of the flex, which is quite a bit; it is clearly meant to flex and not simply flex-IBLE or “bouncy.”

Definitely a unique and intricately-crafted find that is not only a piece of Japanese urushi work history, but a work of art in and of itself!   $570
