Hot take: Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy wasn’t that bad.
Okay, unpopular opinion: I actually didn’t hate the movie. I know the internet’s been dragging it like it committed a crime against humanity, but hear me out.
I'm not an Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy diehard web novel fan. In fact, I didn't read it — I’m not exactly a fan of too many words — but I did do my homework before watching. I watched YouTube summaries of the manhwa to understand the story first. And now...I’m collecting the manga, so yeah. There’s no turning back now. Ugh. $$$
Anyway, I saw the movie in theaters last night, and I get why the story was reframed. The original web novel connects characters to historical Korean figures and constellations, but the movie turned the whole thing into a "game" where humanity has to survive each quest. And honestly? That kind of makes sense for a movie format.
Think about it:
- A web novel has all the time in the world to build lore and layers.
- A manga/anime can stretch out over chapters and episodes.
- But a movie has what, 2 hours, 3 hours max? They had to condense 120 weeks' worth of storytelling into a 120-minute runtime. That’s not easy. If anything, the marketing team gave fans false hope by overselling the movie and misrepresenting the casting.
Some thoughts:
1. The director should’ve been more upfront about the story shift.
Even a small heads-up would've helped. A tweet, a Q&A hint, anything to prep the hardcore fans for the differences.
2. Stop blaming Jisoo.
Yes, Jisoo was marketed as a main character. Yes, to me, I think she was more of a supporting character. But that’s on the marketing team, not her. She delivered with her performance, and it’s unfair that the backlash landed on her. She doesn’t write the script or edit the scenes. People need to chill and be more objective.
3. Movies are meant to entertain.
If you went in expecting a perfect replica of the web novel, that’s on you. You already watched the movie and paid for it — mission accomplished for the creators. Also, unless the original author publicly rejected the changes, why are you getting this angry? It’s not your story.
Life’s hard enough. Can we just enjoy things without dissecting them to death?
