Breaking into tech

My son was convicted as an S.O. back in 2015. He is 35 now and will be released in 30 months. While in he got lucky and got a job doing 3d modeling and software engineering and he took to it like a fish in water. So my question is can he break into tech, is it possible? And how does he do it? I've bought him tons and tons of books and he's learned a lot and says he likes working with Python in AI and data analysis.
