Husband’s job not paying overtime

Employment Law

Location: Wisconsin

My husband currently works for a bar/restaurant. He is now the only person cooking because everyone else has quit. Two weeks ago he put in 68 hours. His paycheck only showed 40 hours. The manager told him the owner would be giving him a check for the remainder. Three days later, I made him send a message to the manager stating that he needed to be paid by the end of the day and that all of his hours need to be on his paycheck. The owner showed up that night and gave him cash. It was more than what it would’ve been for just base pay but less than what it would’ve been with overtime, so not sure what happened there. Today, he saw what his paycheck will be on Friday and it once again only has 40 hours.

I already know that his employer lying about his hours on his paycheck is illegal, but do they legally have to pay him overtime? I assume that is why they are changing the hours on his paycheck.

Also for context, my husband is not American and his English isn’t great. Hence why I told him to send a message.
