Trans Kids who just came out to their parents: It Will Get Better.
When I first came out to my mother, I was 12. I told her I didn't think I was a girl. She looked at me dead-eyed, and nodded, and went "okay". And she ignored it.
The second time I came out to my mother, I told her I was nonbinary. That was a few months later. She hummed, nodded, and ignored it.
The third time I came out to my mother, I was 13, and I told her I thought was a boy. She groaned, said that she thought my gender "is not boy, but tomboy", and refused to call me anything I asked of her.
The fourth time I came out to my mother, I was 14, and I told her I knew I was a boy while sitting next to my therapist. And then I left them to talk on their own.
I am now 17. She has not deadnamed me in almost two years. The only times she misgenders me are when she has to talk to people I am not yet out to. The only times she ever calls me anything feminine are when she mixes me up with the dog. She makes me pride-flag bracelets and shows me cool boy haircuts she saw while scrolling on Instagram.
It will get better. Sometimes parents just need a little time.
